Why do people with Diabetes need to visit a Podiatrist?
Diabetes is a lifelong condition that causes a person's blood sugar (glucose) level to become too high. If left unmanaged, it can cause additional health problems. Large amounts of glucose can damage blood vessels, nerves and organs.
Even a mildly raised glucose level that doesn't cause any symptoms can have damaging effects in the long term. Nerve damage can lead to sensory neuropathy (loss or limited feeling in the foot).
Here at Footman Podiatry we provide high standards of routine foot care at each appointment. This includes cutting and filing toe nails, treating hard skin, callouses, and corns. We check the circulation in your feet with a doppler, and the sensation with a monofilament detector at every routine podiatry visit as standard. We check for any irregularities, such as Atrial Fibrillation otherwise known as Irregular Heart Beat and any foot abnormalities. If we detect any potential heart irregularities, we will further check your heart using a 'Kardia Mobile' device, which is like a mini 'ECG'. Should this show problems or if we find anything unusual, this will be reported to your doctor. Your feet can give clues to underlying health problems, and we are the detectives to investigate.
