Cracked Heels

Are you suffering with cracked heels?

Here at the Podiatry and Gait Clinics, we understand how cracked heels also called heel fissures can impact your daily life. They can present as visible splits or cracks in the skin on the heels, often due to dryness, thickened skin, or pressure.

Appearance:

Dry, thickened skin (callus) around the rim of the heel
Yellowish or brownish discolouration in callused areas
Visible cracks or fissures, which can be:

Superficial (affecting only the outer layer of skin)
Deep (painful, sometimes bleeding)
Scaling or flaking of the skin on the heels
In severe cases: redness, bleeding, or crusting

Symptoms:

Dryness and rough skin texture
Pain or tenderness, especially on standing or walking
Bleeding from deep fissures
Itching or discomfort
Sometimes infection (redness, swelling, pus, or warmth) if bacteria enter the cracks.

Cracked heels cause:

Xerosis (dry skin) — often due to cold weather, dehydration, or prolonged standing
Obesity — increased pressure on the heels
Open-back shoes or sandals — allow the fat pad to expand sideways, leading to cracking
Skin conditions — e.g. eczema, psoriasis, ichthyosis
Endocrine/metabolic issues — diabetes, hypothyroidism
Poor foot hygiene or inadequate moisturising
